The difference from a CMO

The titles Marketing Director and Chief Marketing Officer are often used interchangeably because the roles are very similar. A company may choose one title or the other, but the underlying responsibilities are essentially the same.

Key skills

The role requires industry expertise, campaign planning, marketing resource management, the ability to analyse and compare performance indicators from different reports, and the leadership needed to coordinate the marketing team.

Can the role be external?

Although the role is often kept in-house, it can be outsourced when the business does not need someone full-time or has budget constraints. In the industry, outsourcing this role is more commonly described as working with a Fractional CMO.
